Wagswoofs – Surveillance footage captured the moment when two burglars broke into Lola Saratoga, a small business in Saratoga Springs, New York. The video shows the culprits targeting the back area of the store, which specializes in pre-owned luxury designer handbags.
Inside Edition Digital’s Leigh Scheps spoke to owner Megan Druckman, who revealed that they can grab the Birkin, Chanel, and Christian Dior bags in under 90 seconds.
According to Druckman, it is highly unlikely that the thieves had prior knowledge of the store layout. They managed to bypass the two front cases that displayed Louis Vuitton handbags, indicating their familiarity with the store.
It was around 5:00 in the morning on Dec. 12 when the alarm to her store suddenly went off. As she answered her phone in the middle of the night, she couldn’t help but feel like she was in the midst of a nightmare. On the other end of the line were the police.
“We had a fantastic opportunity to have a phenomenal December in terms of our stock. Our team was filled with enthusiasm and eager to make sales during the holiday season. However, since half of our inventory is gone, it’s impossible to compensate for the loss in sales figures,” she explains. “It takes a considerable amount of time and effort to source and authenticate these items, as well as curate a diverse selection for our store. We have been carefully building up our inventory for the holiday season since October.”
Druckman launched her business a decade ago, leveraging her experience in corporate retail. The initial spark came from selling items from her own closet, which eventually led to the growth of her business.
Now, she currently operates two physical stores.
“It was a humble beginning for us, in a small 300-square-foot storefront, with only a fraction of the inventory we have now. So, when someone can walk in and, in just 90 seconds, take away everything we’ve built over the past 10 years, it’s absolutely devastating,” she expresses, her voice filled with despair.
“You hear about these smash and grab robberies in large cities at big box retailers, but for it to happen to a small business is devastating. I mean, this is something that can easily cripple a business.”
In Old Town Spring, Texas, smash-and-grab thieves also broke into JJ’s closet, a mom-and-pop store that sells used designer handbags. Four guys were caught on camera stealing as many Louis Vuitton bags as they could carry.
“We have had occasional incidents of shoplifting in our town, but nothing could have prepared us for the audacity that we witnessed when four masked robbers targeted our family-owned small business on November 12, 2023. That day will forever be etched in my memory as an entrepreneur,” shared the owners in an email conversation with Inside Edition Digital. They continued, “The disturbing images of these four masked men violating our store and the shattering of glass cabinets still haunt us. It is evident that these criminals do not belong in Old Town Spring.”
Lola Saratoga has also implemented additional security measures at their store to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
The Saratoga Springs Police Department is currently in search of two male suspects who were seen arriving and leaving the scene in a dark-colored sedan. As a precautionary measure, the police have decided to enhance their patrols in the downtown area during the night and throughout the rest of the holiday season.
