Catholic Priest In Nebraska Died After Attack In Church Rectory

Wagswoofs –  In a tragic incident, a Catholic priest in a small Nebraska city lost his life after being assaulted in the church rectory during the early hours of Sunday morning.

In a recent statement, the Archdiocese of Omaha reported that Rev. Stephen Gutgsell was attacked during a break-in at the rectory of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.

The statement expressed that the Archdiocese of Omaha is offering prayers for Father Stephen Gutgsell.

Fort Calhoun, situated approximately 16 miles north of Omaha, became the backdrop for an alarming incident. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the occurrence, which unfolded at the church at approximately 5 a.m. Prompted by 911 calls reporting a break-in, the police arrived to find an alleged assailant and a wounded Gutgsell within the premises, as reported by the Associated Press.

Officials have not yet provided any additional details, but they have confirmed that a suspect is currently in custody. They have also assured the public that there is no imminent danger. More information is expected to be released later today.

Gutgsell was transferred to Nebraska Medicine by the Archdiocese of Omaha, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
