A political action committee (PAC) that focuses on Social Security has recently endorsed one of Senator Rick Scott’s opponents, as Democrats continue to criticize Scott’s stance on the issue.
Former U.S. Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who is the leading Democratic contender challenging Scott’s reelection, has received the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC.
Max Richtman, the president and CEO of the National Committee, stated that Florida seniors need a Senator who will safeguard their earned benefits instead of putting them at risk. He acknowledged that Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has been a staunch defender of Social Security and Medicare and has received a 100% voting record from the National Committee for her efforts to protect and enhance these programs while serving in Congress.
In 1982, James Roosevelt, a former U.S. Representative and son of former President Franklin Roosevelt, established a political committee with the aim of safeguarding the Social Security and Medicare programs of the New Deal era. The committee, named after its mission, has been committed to preserving these programs ever since.
Scott has been the target of Democratic criticism, with his agenda being the main issue. He had released a plan called “Rescue America” before the Midterms, which aimed to evaluate all federally funded programs after five years. President Joe Biden was quick to point out that this plan could endanger Social Security. As a result, these popular programs have become a central topic of discussion.
After facing criticism, Scott eventually modified his plan to clarify that he did not require a review of Social Security. However, his political rivals, such as the National Committee, stated that the original proposal revealed Scott’s true intentions.
According to Richtman, Senator Rick Scott has a terrible track record when it comes to important programs like Social Security and Medicare. In fact, he even suggested terminating these programs, along with other vital federal programs, after just five years. This is why the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC has chosen to endorse Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for the position of United States Senate.
Mucarsel-Powell expressed her gratitude for the support.
According to the Miami Democrat, there is a stark contrast between the candidates in this election. Rick Scott is the mastermind behind the plan to cut Social Security and Medicare, whereas she authored the bill to enhance Medicare. She firmly believes that people work tirelessly throughout their lives to secure a happy and comfortable retirement, and it is downright unfair for politicians to take away their hard-earned benefits for their own interests.
“I feel incredibly honored to have received this endorsement and I am eager to fulfill my responsibility of safeguarding the Social Security and Medicare benefits of the people of Florida during my tenure in the Senate.”
According to spending tracked by Open Secrets, the National Committee has historically provided support to both Democrats and Republicans. However, since the 2014 election cycle, the committee has only extended their support to Democrats.
