Dozens Displaced After Massive Fire Outbreak In East NY Apartment Building During New Year’s Eve

Wagswoofs – A massive fire on Sunday night has resulted in the displacement of numerous individuals from an apartment building in East New York.

According to the FDNY, a fire broke out at 881 Schenck Avenue in the courtyard of the Boulevard Houses at around 7:30 p.m. The fire rapidly spread from the construction material in the courtyard to the adjacent building.

“I’ve been living here for 9 years, and I have never witnessed anything as dreadful as this,” expressed Ketsy Serrano, a tenant.

People who live there, like Ebony McJunkin, say they heard small popping sounds followed by a loud boom that sounded like an explosion. McJunkin says her room on the third floor caught fire in a matter of seconds.

“My whole back room was up in flames, fire coming through the window,” said McJunkin .

According to the FDNY, two firefighters and five other individuals sustained minor injuries in the incident. Although the cause of the fire is currently being investigated, residents believe that fireworks may have been involved. This suspicion arose after fire officials informed them that a nearby cannister had been discovered.

The Red Cross has already offered assistance to 12 households, which includes 29 adults and 6 children. Currently, many of them are being accommodated in hotels.

On Monday morning, the property managing company conducted a visit to the site in order to conduct a more comprehensive evaluation of the damage. The purpose of the visit was also to hold meetings with various city agencies involved.
