Wagswoofs – According to the police, officers shot a 19-year-old man after he brandished a firearm when they arrived at the scene of a potential car accident on Thursday morning.
According to Chief of Patrol John Chell, the incident occurred at around 3 a.m. in Washington Heights when two uniformed officers responded to multiple reports of a car crash or stolen vehicle at W. 177th Street and Haven Avenue.
When the officers approached the car, it was clear that it had been involved in an accident. As they got closer, Chell witnessed the 19-year-old male driver jumping out of the car. He was holding a gun and wearing a mask. Shockingly, the driver proceeded to fire at the officers. The police later confirmed this terrifying act of aggression.
The officers discharged a total of eight shots, hitting the man in the chest on two occasions, as mentioned by Chell. The man was promptly transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he underwent surgery and is now anticipated to make a full recovery.
According to Chell, the police have confirmed that the female passenger is safe and is willingly assisting them with their investigation.
Chell said that after the shooting, the police found a note inside the car. The note indicated that the man wanted to commit suicide due to “various things going on in his life.”
Chell mentioned in the note that the individual also expressed apologies to the police for the forthcoming events.
The police have also taken the officers to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. However, it is not known what injuries they have sustained, as per the police.
The investigation is still ongoing, according to the police. They have not yet released the name of the man involved.
